About this deal

Theodore Pictish Gin aims to bring the two worlds a step closer together, with founder Barthelemy Brosseau recruiting a perfume designer and two master distillers to help him create a Gin that flirts around the edges of the past, telling the story of the Pictish people and the man who chiselled them into the history books, Theodore De Bry. That is, of course the next great obstacle to overcome - to complete the distillery itself and move production to Scotland without impacting the flavour. It’s a mighty task even for a team who can rely on handover notes from two of the most talented distillers of their respective generations, namely as it involves a new distiller stepping into their shoes and maintaining it over the months to come whilst also getting used to a new environment. If that in itself wasn’t a daunting task, consider the following; currently, if the information provided is accurate at least five different distillations are happening on three different stills, with a further three separate post-infusions going on thereafter. Try to replicate that without making a noticeable alteration in the profile! It’ll be fiendishly complicated. Barth commissioned an illustrator to rework de Bry’s drawings, creating two Pictish characters for a new century: a man and woman, drawn as equals to highlight Pictland’s matrilineal society, strong warriors adorned with the beautiful body paint of legend. In this way, he could pay tribute to both the mysterious tribe that inspired his botanical blend and the talented artist that gave it a name. Theodore Gin is presented in a beautiful bespoke bottle and box which features the artwork of the Picts and the 16 botanicals that were commissioned from illustrator Carlotta Saracco. The gin is made using 16 botanicals including pine, Damask rose, pomelo and bourbon vetiver, which have been distilled in a multi-stage process using an old charentais still alongside a rotovap to extract the best flavours and aromas from each.

Theodore’s initial top note is of elegant, citric pomelo and crisp pine needles that evoke the scent of fresh grass. As the top notes give way, honey ushers in a floral heart of Damask rose and oolong tea. A Dissertation on Mr. Hogarth's Six Prints Lately Publish'd inscrib'd to the Lord Mayor, City of London and Worshipful Court of Aldermen, 1751. Base notes of bourbon vetiver add a smoky, woody aroma with hints of vanilla, and oolong tea delivers further green notes to complement the citrus and pine. The distinctive combination has a long finish on the palate, with delicate rose returning in waves. The first edition of Theodore Gin has been created with guidance from olfactory expert and perfume designer, Barnabé Fillion.

The Picts are history wrapped in legend, the truth of their civilisation shaded by rumour and lore. Little is known about this race of Scotsmen, who held off the Roman legions and left us nothing but intricately carved metal and stone, including the famous Wolf of Ardross. The gin takes its name from Theodore de Bry, a 16th century engraver who brought the Picts to life through his art. While he had never met a Pict, his representations powerfully captured their intrepid identity.

Theodore has been created with guidance from perfume designer,BarnabéFillion, and is presented in a beautiful bespoke bottle and box, which features artwork of the Picts and the 16 botanicals within the gin commissioned from illustrator Carlotta Saracco. Gin appealed to Barth as an opportunity to learn. “Gin was interesting for me because it was like a blank canvas. It was about learning how to play with liquid, how to meet interesting people and, most importantly, how to bring Ardross to life.” Using a medley of botanicals that the Picts may have encountered on their travels, the gin forges links between ancient legends and the world we live in today.Greenwood Distillers founder Barthelemy Brosseau said: “Greenwood Distillers was founded to fulfil a desire to create a global network of distilleries linked by a common respect for spirits and local traditions, but driven by an explorative mindset. There’s talk of new ideas in the pipeline too, but it seems like Greenwood know what they are doing, pursuing steady growth via other categories before doing anything too crazy in gin. It’s a reassuring thing to listen to talk from a new team focused on doing something unique and doing it right, not machine gunning a million things out into the world until something hits the mark. They’ll certainly need that focus now that they set a very high benchmark for themselves too. Theodore Gin is the first release from Greenwood Distillers andfeatures16 botanicalsinspired by those that the Picts may have encountered on their travels to Scotland when they settled near the brand’s new home in the Northern Highlands
