Mist your orchid every two to three days with Plantsmith Invigorating Orchid Care Mist. Image: Debi Holland It’s best to feed houseplants regularly during their growing season, a period that generally runs from March to September. During this time, feed every other time you water. Apart from some flowering houseplants, most are dormant over winter, so require fewer nutrients to keep them in good shape. Take your orchid out of its pot and look at the roots. Some will be growing out of the pot in the air and some have hunkered down into the growing medium. Get rid of any old, withered material, snip off the dead roots. This will give healthy roots more space to flourish. Remove the orchid from the pot. Our winter homes provide ideal growing conditions for Christmas Cactus. They are most happy in a room temperature around 20°C (68°F) but can seamlessly cope with fluctuations. Refresh your potting mix. Use shredded bark chips or a professional peat-free compost bark mix to support roots, and if you have one, a clear pot so roots can photosynthesise but if you really want to display Phalaenopsis in your favourite opaque pot then just regularly remove your plant from its outer pot and leave it out on a bright windowsill so roots get access to light. The three most common species sold in the UK are the Thanksgiving cactus, Schlumbergera truncata, Christmas cactus, Schlumbergera bridgesii and the Easter cactus, Schlumbergera gaertneri, formerly Hatiora gaertneri and they all have the same care requirements in our homes.
Thriving in temperatures from 12°C – 26°C (55°F –80°F) with low humidity they will pretty much take care of themselves, just dead head spent blooms and occasionally water when the top inch of soil dries out. Don’t over water them or you will kill your plant with kindness. When they need repotting refresh in a slightly larger pot of peat-free soil and feed monthly fromspringto autumn.
