About this deal

Finally, further support and advice is provided to woodland owners by helping them evaluate their woodland against the UK Forestry Standard (UKFS) using the myForest Woodland Assessor developed by the Sylva Foundation with the aim to produce a UK Forestry Standard (UKFS) compliant Woodland Management Plan. Forest Lab is an application within myForest which provides technology and tools to help land managers share data to inform environmental science, and in return improve knowledge exchange between scientists and land managers. The myForest Assessor is a woodland condition self-assessment tool . Analysing your woodland stewardship methodically is a great way to improve your management practices in accordance with the UKFS. The Assessor will provide you with a detailed report and certificate based on the answers you provide to 30 questions.

Wildfire Project - The objective of this project is to collect valuable information and data to help understand wildfire risk for researchers. This information will be used to assess and decrease wildfire risk for myForest users, and woodland owners across the country. How to set a file projection will vary depending on the software used to generate your compartment, sub-compartment, or feature mapping. For guidance on setting a file projection, please refer to guidance produced by the software provider. For more information on file projections please find more information below. If you choose to appoint an agent to develop your woodland management plan you must sign a form to give an agent authority to act for you when dealing with the Forestry Commission. You can submit this Forestry Commission agent authority form as part of your application for funding. Benefits to forest scientists are access to knowledge, information and data about many different woodlands. We are calling this project Forest Lab. Engagement Agreement Dave Biggs, WoodMizer UK Woodland Management Focus Area Pilot - Reheat (renewable technologies) Ltd (re:heat)Currently there are three live Forest Lab projects covering resilience, wildfire and tree growth, with plans to offer more in the future: Firstly, the Focus Area Pilot is developing a methodology that uses Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to analyse hurdles (such as slope, access, and proximity to markets) to the active management of woodlands. The methodology uses the Forestry Commission’s Managed Woodland Headline Performance Indicator dataset to identify unmanaged woodlands. In the first year (2020) we are engaging with stakeholders within the Northern Forest, to co-design and then assess a range of innovative methods to provide greater knowledge and improved management of woodland creation for a wide range of stakeholders at different holding scales and across different landscapes. At the end of March we held an interactive online workshop with 27 stakeholders to start the co-design process. When coppiced, sweet chestnut re-grows multiple, straight lengths of roundwood from each ‘stool’. Coppicing is also naturally regenerative and harvesting in this way encourages higher levels of biodiversity than other monoculture woodlands. Coppice forestry also creates skilled rural jobs. By linking forestry practices, ecology and construction, the HGH project has forged new connections that contribute to a holistic, sustainable and local timber supply chain.

If you have not already done so, the first step is to create and map the relevant Sub-compartments for which you wish to apply for a felling licence. Features are an important part of any forest creation or management plan, ensuring each feature is mapped accurately is vital to developing an effective maps and plans which are appropriate for any range of desired activities. myForest supports users through regulation and good practice, making sustainable management and the creation of forests across Britain easier to achieve. In August 2022, Sylva Foundation launched the new enhanced version of myForest to provide the latest in technology and guidance to sustainably manage forests, and unique support for the creation of new forests across Britain. While myForest has a new look and rebranded, there has been no impact on your stored data and information. In providing three different file formats for exporting, we have created a versatile tool, which can function with other programs. Based upon where you intend to use the file would influence the format you might export it as. Another key difference is that GeoJSON and KML both export as a single file, whereas Shapefiles are several files which you have to zip. Some grant schemes ask land managers to have an approved management plan in place prior to making an application. The Wildfire Project aims to collect valuable information and data to help understand wildfire risk, which in turn will be used to assess and decrease wildfire risk for myForest users. Volunteers complete questionnaires and a wildlife fire risk assessment at regular intervals. Tree Growth Project myForest for Education: the UK’s first woodland management planning application designed specifically for education.
