About this deal

You aren’t limited in what you can do either. While the turns are simple, question or search, you can ask any player you’d like, even if someone just asked them on the turn before you, and select anywhere on the board to ask them for information. But even though this is simple, you still have a lot to think about before you do because if you ask them and they put out a cube then you also have to place one on the board. This gives everyone information about your clue and helps them. To question, place the pawn on a space on the map, and ask any other player 'Could the creature be here?'

There are several possible clue types, but they all relate to distance from certain elements on the board. Some clues specify that the habitat must be on a type of terrain, while others specify that the habitat is within a certain number of spaces of a type of terrain, structure, or animal territory. Still, none of this makes Cryptid any less dull. Even after replaying it for this review and writing about it, it still doesn’t elicit a response in me. It’s just too mundane. Whether I solve the mystery and get the location of the animal right doesn’t matter if I forget about it a couple hours later. You can choose any space to question, even one which you know could not be the habitat. In fact, this is often a good way to throw people off the scent of your own clue! The fastest way to set up a new game is to put the cards and clue books away, then follow the instructions at: playcryptid.com.

Possible Clues

to start this post off, i just want to thank everyone so much for the insane amount of support and love that this game has gotten. i'm just one person, literally just a kid in college, and to know that something that i've created has touched over 1,800 peopleis absolutely mindblowing. i've wanted to make video games since i was in middle school. this is a dream come true. i love these characters and this world with all my heart and i'm so, so, so grateful and so happy that you all love it too.thank you so much! i won't let you guys down!

Each player has cubes and discs in their chosen player colors. The cubes are used to indicate that a space on the board could not be the creatures habitat according to their clue while the discs are used to indicate that, according to their clue, could be the creatures habitat. Example:'The habitat is on forest or swamp.' This player knows the habitat is on a forest space or a swamp space, so would place discs on those spaces. The player knows the habitat cannot be on any other terrain type, so would place cubes on spaces with any other terrain type.

About the contributors

Each player has their own set of cubes and discs, which they will place on the board when they are forced to give the other players information. A cube means that space cannot be the creature's habitat, according to that player's clue. Personally, I have yet to feel like I’ve needed to use paper and pen to help, but other players we have played with have found this very helpful. I recommend playing your first game without the use of paper and seeing how it goes. There are such a wide variety of clues that just because a player places a cube on, say, a water space, it doesn’t mean that the creature can’t be in the water, it may be because the water space is too far away from a structure, or a desert space, or perhaps an animal territory. You could write something down one turn, and then be erasing it just seconds later depending on how the game progresses. How does it play with two? Most deduction games require at least a party of three, but with Cryptid you can play with two players by setting the game up for four. You and your opponent will have two colors and two clues each.
