About this deal

One thing that I'm most grateful for is that all the ingredients are measured not only in cups, tablespoons, etc. but also in grams, making it so much easier for us european bakers. I hate when there're only american measurements in the recipe and I have to convert every single ingredient! There's also a conversion table at the end and some music to bake to (nice touch!). All the recipes have a step by step easy enough for even the most unexperienced bakers to follow. This is evidently a complex situation but I think Jacqueline Wilson has dealt with it remarkably well. We can clearly see how Dilys and Beauty feel oppressed by him. Even though his actions seem loving from the outside, they clearly torment the girls and we are shown how Beauty has learned to act at a young age to please her father. Double Act won the prestigious Smarties Medal and the Children’s Book Award as well as being highly commended for the Carnegie Medal. The Story of Tracy Beaker won the 2002 Blue Peter People’s Choice Award.

I have never read any Jacqueline Wilson books before, I knew (I thought I knew) what kind of books she writes, you know, Tracy Beaker is on all the time on CBBC etc. I didn't think badly of her books, but I wasn't really interested in them, I thought I'd read it all before. Cookie - a lass with sass who'll inspire girls and boys alike (and make mums and dads laugh too) ... daft and funny for all.' - Zoe Ball Considering the last book I read by Jacqueline Wilson ( Lily Alone) was merely lukewarm, I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed this particular offering. Despite the dark themes of bullying and spousal/child abuse (Beauty's father is both emotionally and psychologically abusive), this story is full of warm fuzzies. And I'm not just talking about the rabbits. At home Beauty's life is as far from normal. Her mum loves her to bits and has never got cross with her but with her dad it's another story. Beauty and her mum live in fear of what's going to happen and if he gets cross you want to be as far away as possible. Mama Bear: Over the course of the story, Dilly develops the courage to stand up to Gerry and defend Beauty from his verbal and emotional abuse. As she puts it: "I've never been able to stand up for myself very well but I can stand up for my little girl."

About Author

I have read: Scarlett, the Chocolate Box series, Dizzy, Angel Cake, Gingersnaps, Sundae Girl and I’m actually about to start ‘Love From Lexie’. Serial Spouse: Gerry has been married three times. He divorced his first wife Avril to marry his second wife Ashleigh, then divorced her to marry his third and current wife Dilly. Avril gives the impression he tends to trade in his wives for younger, prettier women every decade or so and initially assumes Gerry left Dilly for another woman when she and Beauty turn on Avril's doorstep, only for Dilly to state that she left Gerry. Gerry's selfishness and controlling behavior also probably doesn't make him the best partner, especially if his treatment of Dilly is anything to go by.

This is one of my favourite Jacqueline Wilson books, and I think Beauty is one of my favourite of her characters too - I find her very relatable, especially her vivid imagination, her awkwardness, and her love of Sara Crewe from 'A Little Princess'. Dedicated to food and wine, Gourmet magazine was one of the first monthly publications in the U.S. Founded by Earle R. MacAusland; the magazine had published its first magazine in 1941. Miranda Couse Dessert recipes range from the Classic Chocolate Chip made three different ways, to bars, brownies, and blondies that reflect a wide range of flavors and global inspiration. Cool Big Sis: Angela acts as one to Beauty; she's around fourteen, making her several years older than Beauty. Angela sits next to her on the bus and takes her to her classroom on her first day at her new school, doing her best to reassure Beauty and making her feel welcomed.Everyone Loves Blondes: Dilly is blonde and very attractive. Apparently, Gerry has a thing for blondes, as his ex-wife at one point asks Dilly if he left her for "another little blonde". Featured in Food & Wine, The Kitchn, Cup of Jo, Wall Street Journal, Wine Enthusiast, Food52, Bake from Scratch Magazine. Nominated for a 2020 Goodreads Choice Award for Best Cookbooks I let the novel rest and then read it again on my Kindle. The novel flowed much better, and there were only a few scenes that needed fixing. Bratty Half-Pint: Skye and her Girl Posse are cruel, snobby and manipulative; Skye is particular is an Attention Whore who loves to show off and hates it when other kids - especially Beauty - are in the spotlight.
