At its briefest, the moment of total desire lasts as long as the moment of orgasm. It lasts longer when passion increases and extends desire. Yet, even at its briefest, the experience should not be treated as only a physical/nervous reflex. The stuff of imagination (memory, language, dreams) is being deployed. Because the other who is palpable and unique between one's arms is--at least for a few instants--exclusively desired, she or he represents, without qualification or discrimination, life itself. The experience = I + life. Hypnotic and quite un-intelligible either by the men in his circle who mostly dislike and even hate him, or by the women who are mostly fascinated despite themselves, G remains a mystery to the end with his actions confounding everyone expectations. The book is worth reading for this unexpected moments, though of course it has more strengths. The prose is just beautiful and on many occasions mesmerizing and the introspective descriptions of people in a romantic and erotic context are among the best I've ever read. What did I not like? The main character, G. (there is no real explanation why the character’s name is G., and yes it includes the “.”) is a Don Juan whose entire focus is seducing women. He is wealthy, but the wealth is all inherited; he has done nothing to acquire it. He has no interest in history, culture or power. Other than some transformation in G. towards the end of the novel, there seems to be little plot. In addition to his singular focus when pursuing a particular woman, there is nothing in G’s actions or conversational skills that explain why women throw themselves, sometimes literally, at his feet. Why does writing about sexual experience reveal so strikingly what may be a general limitation of literature in relation to aspects of all experience?I love Lily Archer's works, and she didn't disappoint in her newest release of The Book of G. Starting with a mysterious introduction to our main character G, who has no memories of who he used to be and how he was severely wounded, I was instantly drawn in and wanting to know more. Each character that was introduced was more than just a move to further the plot; they were insights into a world that was both the same and different from our own.

G is essentially lonely and a tender person stumbling through his life. His one attraction is the way his liaisons with women awaken something extraordinary in their minds and hearts. Confirmation of Permanent Residence (IMM 5292)accompanied by a valid passport from country of origin I loved seeing the relationship between the two main characters develop as time went on, and how though there was character development, it was done in a way that was realistic and didn't suddenly make a main character turn from morally gray to a knight in shining white armor. Though he did have redeeming moments, his focus remained on being good for the love interest *swoon*. An unusual read and very post modern. G as a character is at times brilliant and mad. Born to a wealthy American woman who was the mistress of a Livorno candied merchant. She immediately abandons the child to her cousins in the English countryside where G is introduced to sex by Beatrice his cousin. The ending was sweet however it was never really explained how it’s rare for fae people and humans to have children. Having only this being my 2nd book that’s based off fae (didn’t know if this was universal logic?) so it would have been cool to have a small section going into why it’s so rare and left wondering. Didn't feel any magic but i attribute that to me being in a lowkey reading slump and the fact i started this on a heels of a dnf that really pissed me off. So i hope to reread this sometime and feel the magic that i think it has the potential to give me. I get the idea of him growing from a selfish guy to a better guy... but I'm not a big fan of him ONLY being concerned about her. He doesn't become a better person... he starts to love one other person than himself... and even the way he loves her is a bit selfish. I wanted a deeper redemption arc for him. Perhaps by placing the stories of G.'s love affairs cheek by jowl with the wonders and horrors of the early 20th century Berger intends to make a statement, but I fail to comprehend what it might be. There is a beautiful and insightful passage about women viewing themselves as though they are agents for the owners of their persons (the owners being father, husband and children, primarily) but the connection between those musings and the relationship to which it is supposed to relate is never established. There is a bald statement that he demands of this particular lover that she be entirely herself without reference to any other relationship in her life, but it is never demonstrated. Next thing we know, they have had their brief affair and he contemplates seducing her closest friend so there is no mistake about the longevity of their association. Baffling and incomplete.
