About this deal

He hopes by sharing this story that readers will be encouraged to accept and love their true selves, and help break down some gender stereotypes along the way. So… butch Dad puts on a dress too (he has his own secret interest evidently) and shows the boy pictures of people in their family who have interests outside their ‘shadow’ group – a blue-shadowed man who loves paintings and fashion, and a pink-shadowed girl who is into cars and engines in a big way. This is an important book for a new generation of children (and adults alike) which exemplifies the concepts of unconditional love, respect and positive parenting.

I do feel, however, that the dual themes could be a little confusing as the main character has such a fully pink shadow. I have heard a few of his female friends say he can’t like Frozen or ‘girly’ things so I was looking for a story to reinforce that he can like and be whatever he wants to. I do not think the book is stereotypical as it is very informative and states how children may feel and how their identity can be explained. Inspired by the best selling Melbourne author's own son, My Shadow is Pink is a beautifully written rhyming story of love and self-acceptance that touches on the subjects of gender identity, equality and diversity.I do agree with some of the other readers that pink and blue is a bit stereotypical, but that is how most of the society sees those colors so I don't mind those colors as much. This book is a lovely nod to those who feel they don’t match the expectations of others and are on a journey to accept themselves. Mijn schaduw is roze vertelt ons het verhaal van een jongetje dat opgroeit in een familie waarin ieders schaduw blauw is.

If you need a good, beautiful book to read to your kids or grandkids I'd highly recommend My Shadow is Pink, it's lovely. Our youngest son also loves the story, and it's brilliant giving him exposure at an age where he doesn't understand the depth of meaning, so that he can hopefully grow up without the societal gender constructs/mindset/opinions of previous generations.

However, the boy has an irrepressible pink shadow, and loves ponies and books and pink toys, princesses, fairies, and things 'not for boys'.
