About this deal

The dangerous obsession within the relationship of husband and wife and the guilt when the wife found out…. My Other Husband is fantastic in so many ways, it draws you into Cleo’s life, like your standing outside the window watching the drama unfold. Cleo is a successful author, but the people in her life are dying the same way as the characters in her novels are.

Why has she told the TV company that no more shows will be made, and why on earth is she divorcing Wallace? Dorothy Koomson is the award-winning author of 15 novels and has been making up stories since she was 13 when she used to share her stories with her convent school friends. We know that Cleo is choosing to implode her own life, which seems to be going well, and we find out why through chapters dispersed throughout the current timeline that provide us the background that leads to her current situation. There is plenty of tension and suspenseful moments and some well thought out plot twists as it builds to a very good ending.

In a parallel story, with a different timeline, we see where Cleo is now and learn how she reached that place. A clever and multi-layered dark thriller, My Other Husband is a gripping read that left me gasping in shock more than once. We follow Cleo and Heath, and their friend Trina, through university and beyond and grow to understand Cleo and Heath’s relationship. The story is told through two timelines where we meet Cleo in the present as she is going through a divorce and being faced with a murder investigation, and in the past when she is at university and entering into her first relationship with the peculiar Heath. Dorothy was featured on the 2021 Powerlist as one of the most influential Black people in Britain and appeared in GQ Style as a Black British trailblazer. There are lots of twists and turns in this book which keep you gripped right until the very last page. Not too sure how to describe this book, other than the fact that this is a unique book, a plot which I won’t forget. I use my writing to try to explore what I’m feeling, I try to get into the heads of other people so I can see things from their point of view. TW: racism, grooming, paedophilia, murder, sexism, misogyny, harassment, mental health, rape ⚠️ This was a really good slow burner that hits you with twists and turns when you least expect it. I haven’t read anything by Dorothy Koomson before, but I will definitely be checking out her other books now, and I 100% this being on your 2022 must-read list.

The contrast between then and now could not be starker with events of 25 years ago feeling like a romcom with the writing being light and breezy. This was so close to being a five-star read for me but the only thing that made me drop half a star was because of how the story ended. Dorothy Koomson is my all time favourite author and I’m yet to read anything I didn’t like from her, this is no exception. I did like some of the characters, especially Sidney, but felt that a good story became a little fantastical when all was said and done. Somehow the first few chapters read like any other women's fiction book to me, especially because I chuckled quite a few times. Writing is all she's ever wanted to do, and baking and murder stories have proved a winning combination.
